So today I was watching my favorite foodie Youtuber, Kinoshita Yuka (you’ve probably seen me posting her videos on here before), eating two whole large Dominos pizzas by herself and I was fascinated to learn that right now Domino’s has special, limited-time women’s and men’s quattro pizzas. The quattro pizzas, if you haven’t seen them in your neck of the woods (I’m not sure if they have them except in East Asia?), are pizzas with 4 different flavors, usually 2 or 3 slices of each (depending on what size pizza you get), and they tend to really switch up the flavors so you can try a variety of sauces and toppings. I like to order the quattros whenever new pizza topping combinations come out because they give you a chance to sample a little of everything without breaking the bank (pizza is really expensive in Japan compared to the U.S…think $40 for a pizza that we in the U.S. would think of as a Medium size pizza…and that’s for Domino’s or Pizza Hut, not some fancy place). After you try different flavors on the quattro you can figure out which are your favorites and later order a whole pizza with one of those topping combos on it (or half half and have a little of two kinds). These particular pizzas she was eating were mayo-based pizzas (yes, in Japan one of the choices of sauce, instead of pizza sauce/marinara, is a mayonnaise sauce…they love their mayo here) and had toppings/amounts of toppings geared towards the male and female audiences. While this may not seem super politically correct in other parts of the world, I see that sort of thing a lot here (places advertising ladies’ versions of meals, which are usually smaller portions or lighter on the calories or they are sweeter than the other dishes…the men’s versions usually have more meat or are larger sizes, more bitter flavors, stuff like that), and (personally) I think it’s all in good fun.
Here is the website for the two warring mayo-based pizzas.
You have the ladies’ pizza…
which features a sampling of 4 different pizzas:
Mayo Jaga (potato) and Sausage (hot dogs, let’s be honest)
Mayo Chicken Teriyaki (I really enjoy this particular pizza topping from Domino’s)
Mayo Kalbi (lightly spicy and wonderfully sweet and savory; this is one of my favorite pizza toppings here)
and Mayo Seafood (I love that you can get shrimp/crab/lobster/clams…stuff like that on pizza here; I know that’s not that crazy but work with me)
OH and the ladies’ pizza is topped with mentaimayo (mentaiko, spicy little fish eggs colored red from the red pepper added, and mayo) to make the mayo topping pink…:D I know, I know…
Then you have the men’s pizza…
which also has a sampling of 4 different pizzas but with more mayo and slightly more toppings:
Besides the extra mayo and slightly heartier amount of toppings the only real differences between this one and the ladies’ pizza are that, instead of the seafood pizza, they have karaage (delicious Japanese fried popcorn chicken) and mayonnaise as a flavor option and they have regular mayonnaise as a topping (not the pink mentaiko mayonnaise). I feel like the anime dude on the ad is looking at the delicious pizza with the same fiery intensity that I’m looking at it right now, past 1 a.m., wishing I had pizza and karaage. I’m going to go cry now over my sad lack of pizza…TT__TT
What do you think about this pizza battle of the sexes? Would you eat either one of these? Would you eat both? Would you stick to the pizza the represents your gender (according to Domino’s) or would you blur the gender lines (a.k.a. just eat whatever looks most delicious lol) and eat whichever you please? Me? I’ll take one of each. 😀
